India tips

What to bring to India
  • Mosquito net and some rope to hang it up
  • Mosquito repellent
  • Padlock and chain for your doors and to lock up your bag on the train.
  • Silk liner (seriously sometimes the sheets are disgusting and they are great at stopping bed bugs)
  • Sleeping bag (it gets cold in winter especially in the north), warm socks and warms clothes as well.
  • Open toed shoes Shoes with high rim so if you do end up stepping in that's cows stinky present you don't get it all over your feet

Trains

We booked all of our trains ourselves, we’d recommend trying to book some of the trains ahead of your trip.  This website will tell you how to use the complex Indian booking system www.seat61.com and this website is where you actually book the train www.irctc.co.in  and this website is where you can find availability www.indiarail.co.in.  When using a foreign credit card the best bank to link through to is Axis Bank. We wasted about 4 hours working this out.  Also the irctc site is pretty crap, it crashes a lot!  Book tickets in advance, we found a train booked out of good seats a month in advance on a more popular line.  We mostly took sleeper, but women travel without a chaperone should probably go 3AC or higher.

Women
  • You are married!  Make up a story of a husband if you are travelling on your own
  • You have to cover up, less so in Kerala and Goa is even more liberal, but otherwise cover your shoulders and no low cut tops, skirts or trousers to your ankles.
  • Take sunglasses
  • Take the top bunk on the train where you can hide and are less likely to get groped in your sleep
  • Sit at the front of the bus which is reserved for women anyway.
Otherwise you get to talk to a whole half of the population that men don’t ever get to interact with.  I spoke to an America guy who in 4 months of India hadn’t spoken to more than 3 women, all older who ran hostels.  School children on buses will adopt up and bus conductors will make sure you get a seat.

I always wanted to buy a water pistol to squirt water and annoying men, I really regret that I didn’t.
